Artillery Hill to McCurdy (aka Middle) Point

Saturday, May 31, 2025
8:30am-approx. 3:00pm (may run a little later)

(early start to make use of low tide)

Location:
Meet at the Battery Kinzie parking area at Fort Worden State Park
Discover Pass required

Instructor:
Tim Lawson

Storytelling is what truly differentiates humans from other animals. Terry Pratchett believed that "Homo sapiens" was inaccurate, and that we should be called "Pan narrans" (the storytelling ape). The human experience is defined by a constant search for narrative to help us understand our lives and the world.

The natural world tells many stories simultaneously. The geology tells how the landscape formed. Plants and trees reveal how soil and climate affected their growth, as well as how they interact with fauna. The animals' tracks and signs illustrate how they survive.

On this hike, you’ll be encouraged to become more inquisitive about your surroundings, unraveling the narratives hidden within the landscape. This approach will not only enhance your hiking experience but also deepen your connection with the natural world.

About the hike:

  • This round trip low tide walk starts at Battery Kinzie at Fort Worden State Park. We walk west along the beach past Artillery Hill, North Beach out to McCurdy Point

  • We’ll be walking about 8+ miles along the beach, rain or shine. Waterproof shoes recommended.

Tuition:

Ages:
For Adults and Engaged kids over 15
(minors must be accompanied by a registered adult)

Maximum class size is 10.
