Timber Frame Intensive 9.2.19-9.12.19

Join Pennsylvanian timber framers Alex Desko and Ethan Jones-Walker of Confluence Fabrication for this hands-on, 40 hour Timber Framing Intensive.  Students will take part in constructing a small, open timber frame structure over the course of two weeks, learning the basics of timber frame layout & construction in the process.

The building is roughly 25'x25' and stands just under 17' to the roof peak. A three post pavilion supports an unconventional roof system that includes two gable trusses connected with a hip and valley system to help negotiate the structure's triangular base.  A "lecture-demonstration-actualization" format will allow students to actively contribute to each stage of this process.  These components will include basic timber grading/grain reading, joinery layout and mathematics, safe and effective power tool usage, hand tool joint paring, test fitting and troubleshooting, and basic rigging and raising techniques.

Historically, timber framing has had deep roots as a community endeavor.  Prior to the industrial revolution, many hands were required to fabricate and raise heavy timbers for what were typically agrarian structures.  This course will conclude with a community-supported frame raising event to display the fruits of learning, fellowship, and good ol’ honest labor for generations to come.

The material fee of $35 will cover the purchase of primarily lay out tools, all of which attendees may take home and use for their own projects, timber frame or otherwise.

Ethan Jones-Walker

is a Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, though he often chooses to live the life of an itinerant carpenter to grow his world-view and gather timber framing skills and approaches from willing teachers, adverse conditions, and most of all, from the timber, itself. Ethan is as one half of Confluence Fabrication Co., a timber framing business that works to build structures with deep intention, integrity, and craftsmanship. CFC is a product of a decade-long friendship, pursuit of craft, and a life-long commitment to learning.
